At Sofyt Agency, we have seen all kinds of heartbreaking visa denial cases, but this one stands out as a lesson in immigration fraud and the risks people take when trying to manipulate the system.
A Dream of a Better Life in the U.S.
A Nigerian man from Ile-Ife was happily married with children when he got the opportunity of a lifetime—he successfully secured a visa to relocate to the United States. Eager to chase the American Dream, he left his wife and children behind in Nigeria, promising to bring them over as soon as he was settled.
However, once in the U.S., his priorities changed. In a bid to secure permanent residency faster, he married a U.S. citizen. This marriage gave him certain immigration benefits, making it easier for him to stay legally.

The Plan to Bring His Real Family Over
After several years, his plan shifted again. Now holding legal status, he decided to divorce his American wife so he could remarry his original Nigerian wife and bring her and their children to the U.S. through a spousal visa application.
However, the Fraud Prevention Unit (FPU) at the U.S. Embassy flagged his case for further review. Something didn’t seem right, and they needed to confirm whether his U.S. marriage had truly ended before approving his wife’s visa.
The Investigation That Exposed the Truth
As part of their fraud detection process, the U.S. Embassy sent a representative to visit his mother-in-law to confirm the authenticity of the marriage and divorce claims. The visit did not go as expected.
When the official questioned the man’s mother-in-law, she unknowingly revealed that her daughter and the man were still happily married—contrary to what he had declared in his visa application. Wanting to prove it further, the family took the official to where the wife and children were staying.
To make matters worse, inside the home, they found family pictures of the man proudly displayed, proving that he was still actively involved in their lives. The truth was out.
Visa Denied—A Costly Mistake
With clear evidence of deception, the U.S. Embassy immediately denied the wife’s visa application. The man’s attempt to manipulate the system had backfired, and his dream of reuniting with his real family in the U.S. was crushed. Worse still, he could now face legal consequences for misrepresenting his marital status to U.S. immigration authorities.
The Lesson: Don’t Play Games with Immigration Rules
Many people think they can outsmart immigration authorities, but the Fraud Prevention Unit is always one step ahead. They conduct deep background checks, send investigators, and verify every piece of information before approving a visa.
If this man had consulted Sofyt Agency, we would have advised him on the right way to bring his family to the U.S. legally, without taking shortcuts that could destroy his plans.
